Villa Los Colibris - Todo Santos- All About Nature

Villa Los Colibris is one of those hidden treasures I'm almost reluctant to tell everyone about. Located in the magical town of Todo Santos, and literally off the beaten dirt road path, it truly is for nature lovers looking for tranquility and beauty. It is a vacation rental consisting of 2 houses and 4 casitas offering all the amenities and services of a boutique hotel. All the casitas and casas have magnificent views of the Pacific ocean and a freshwater estuary and palm grove oasis. Looking in the opposite direction is the majestic Sierra de la Laguna mountains. You can watch the early morning ritual of the local fisherman casting their nets and then the green flash of the Baja sunset late afternoon, and the stars at night...my goodness....need I say more. Los Colibris is a 10 minute walk to 70 miles of secluded pristine beach and only a 5 minute drive to the town of Todo Santos where you will find fabulous restauants, artists galleries, markets, and shops.

Beloved Todo Santos chef, Iker Algorri, author of "Cooking Adventures in Baja Califronia Sur", can be found cooking breakfast each morning at Los Colibris and is available by appointment for Mexican cooking classes and dinners. Enjoy a bottle of wine from one of the owner's cousin's winery in the Valle de Guadalupe. Grab a yoga mat and pratice on their yoga platform which happens to be the highest point on the property, yoga with an incredible view!

The owners also have, in my opinion, one of the best tour companies in Baja. They offer daily excurions, surfing, hikes, kayaking, bird watching, horse back riding and much more. They also have long weekend treks into the mountans, and week long family camping trips, consisting of mountain, desert and beach adventures.  For more information on their amazing tours, give us a call: 800-658-7599

Beaches of La Paz - Balandra Bay

Just a hour and 1/2 drive north of Cabo San Lucas, on Highway 1, is the capital of Baja California Sur, La Paz. It is a very easy, very pleasant drive mostly along the Pacific coast until you move inland to cross over to the Sea of Cortez. La  Paz is a very diverse city, not very touristy, but chock full of things to see and do. If you are  looking for a city with the ambience of "real"  Mexico, you will fully enjoy La Paz.

Once you have had a chance to explore the city, then head north on the Pichilingue Highway,  and no more than 10 minutes into the drive you will start to come  across some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Baja, reminiscent of the Caribbean with clear, calm turquoise waters. La Paz is a commerical port, so the locals will travel to these beaches to swim and spend the day, but I personally have never seen large crowds. Mid week is the time to go! There seems to be enough spots which are spread out so everyone can find a little slice of heaven.  First beach you come to is La Concha Beach Resort.  Even non-guests can use the hotel restaurants and bars and rent snorkel, dive,  water skiing and sailing equipment or book an excursion.

Head further north, just past the Pichilingue Ferry,  and approximately 10 miles, you will start to see beaches, Pichilingue, Coromuel,  and  Tesoro beaches. All have palapa-shaded bars and restaurants, and umbrellas and beach chairs for rent.

But the jewels are just 8 miles further, Balandra Bay and Tecolote beach. The water is a heavenly cerulean blue, and they look out upon Isla Espiritu Santo. There are no restaurants at Balandra, but there is a small food truck, and local vendors the pass every so often offering fresh fruit, homemade empanadas and fresh fish cerviche! You can also rent umbrellas, chairs and kayaks. What else do you need?. Tecolote has a full restaurant and bar and offers panga charters to fish and explore. This also is  Whale Shark territory and excursions go out to swim with these beautiful creatures during the months of October through April each year. Please inquire with Los Cabos in Style for booking your excursions, I offer two very different types of excursions. 800-658-7599. www.loscabosinstyle.com.

ACRE ~ Restaurant and Cocktail Bar `

Another farm to table restaurant and cocktail bar has opened in San Jose Del Cabo. A fews years back, what started with a vacation for two Vancouver entrepreneurs, Stuart McPherson & Cameron Watt, has now become the creation of Acre.

Danielle Tatarin, their GM, is also a mixologist that set up and still runs an award winning Bar, Keefer, in Vancouver., BC. She has spent the last few years traveling Mexico researching and sourcing exotic and obscure Mexican Spirits which you can savor at Arce.

Searching for a chef was a challange for many talented chefs choose to stay in big cities. But once Kevin Luzande and Oscar Torres found out they would be setting up and running their own farm, it became a fast sell to the benefit of all! Local ingredients are their passion and what shapes the menu. They have both worked in New York, Los Angeles and Europe and bring a mixure of Urban and Baja into their creations.

The farm itself is 25 acres and is located in San Jose Del Cabo. The first phase is the restaurant, bar and event space surrounding the farm. In the future 12 Tree-houses will be added to the palm forest and the entire area will be for relaxing, learning, rejuvenating and celebrating. All of the structures have been made from local materials and all furniture, dishware, lighting and accessories are from Baja or the mainland of Mexico. A truly authentic and magical place.

So next time you are in Los Cabos, make Acre a must experience!

The Cape- A Thompson Hotel

This past year The Cape- A Thompson Hotel, opened in Cabo San Lucas. The location is a favorite spot for our local surfers called Monument beach. With one of the proprietors being a surfer himself, he made sure to make an access for the locals so they can continue to enjoy one of the land mark spots for surfing. Little did he know the surfers would become a daily show for the guests, everyone that stays there seems to love watching them!

The hotel made Conde Nast's hot new hotel list this year 2016, landing in the top 3 after a search of hotels on six continents and 36 countries.

The Cape is exactly what has been needed in Los Cabos. It's sleek, sexy, and very stylish. Every luxurious room has a view of the Bay of Cabo San Lucas and the famous "El Arco"

Designed by visionary Mexico City architect Javier Sanchez, it boasts a roof top lounge bar, where you can sip signature cocktails and watch the sun go down in the best location possible. Enjoy casual cuisine and artisan beers at the Ledge by the two pools and outdoor spa cabanas.

Manta is their fine dining restaurant, with Chef Enrique Olvera at the helm. It has been said "there was Mexican food before Chef Olvera and then there is Mexican food after Chef Olvera". Enough said! His combination of Mexican-Peruvian-Japanese inspiration is what makes Manta and his Mexico City restaurant, Pujol, the forward thinking of Mexican cuisine.

May 1st- Mexican Labor Day

Mexico's labor movement was repressed in places such as Cananea in the north. However the Constitution of 1917, instigated significant social reformes to the labor laws. According to some sources, A Labor Day parade was held in Mexico as early as 1913, but the holiday was first officially commenorated on May 1st, 1923. Labor day is not exclusive to Mexico, many countries celebrate Labor/Workers Day.

In Mexico, Labor day parades generally have large crowds holding banners to promote workers' right in the main streets of major cities. Labor day is a federal holiday, giving all Mexicans a day off from labor. It usually includes familes going to the movies and then out of coffee or a meal.

Dia de los Ninos - April 30th

Since 1925, Dia de los ninos or Day of the Children has grown to an annual celebration throughout Mexico. The day recognizes children, pays homage to their importance in society, and endorses their well being. Pat Mora, a Texan native, back in 1966 first heard of the holiday and she started to think she could turn this into one good idea and so Dia de los libros was bred.

Mora felt promoting literacy went hand in hand with supporting the well being of children. Grass roots support for a celebration linking language and literature to Dia del Nino, grew.

Oralila Garza de Cortes, manager of the children's department at San Antonio Public Library at the time immediately supported the concept, and through the work and support of both, El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros became a reality on April 30th 1997.

The goals of both Dia de los ninos/Dia de los libros, extended beyond a single April 30th observance and called for a daily commitment of:

  • honoring children and childhood
  • promoting literacy and the importance of linking all children to books, languages, and cultures
  • honoring home languages and cultures, and thus promoting bilingual and multilingual literacy in this multicultural nation, and gobal understanding through reading.
  • involving parents as valued members of the literacy team
  • promoting library collection development that reflects our plurality

Love and support your children every day........

Santa Maria Bay

Santa Maria Bay

Beautiful Santa Maria Bay. With hurricane Odile behind us, this lovely bay is once again one of the best bays to spend the day. Only a 10 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas,  you will feel removed from the hustle and bustle of Medano Beach. We offer snorkel cruises daily. Choose either a catamaran or sailboat, or if you have rented a car, there is ample parking and signs are clearly visable, so don't hesitate to venture out...
